Job Description 

FOUR SEASONS DC HVAC is seeking an experienced HVAC Project Engineer to plan, design, coordinate and oversee heating, ventilation and air-conditioning projects. The successful candidate will provide engineering and project-management support throughout the design, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and handover stages of commercial and residential HVAC projects. 

Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities 

  • Assess project specifications, architectural and engineering drawings, client requirements, site conditions and applicable building standards to determine HVAC system requirements.  
  • Develop and review HVAC system designs, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, schematics, specifications and technical documentation.  
  • Perform or review heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, duct sizing, airflow requirements and equipment-capacity assessments.  
  • Assist in selecting HVAC equipment and components, including furnaces, air-conditioning units, heat pumps, rooftop units, air-handling units, fans, pumps, controls and associated mechanical equipment.  
  • Plan and manage HVAC projects from the initial design and estimating stages through installation, testing, commissioning and final turnover.  
  • Prepare project scopes of work, material take-offs, cost estimates, equipment schedules, project timelines and technical reports.  
  • Coordinate HVAC designs and installation requirements with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, fire-protection and building-automation systems.  
  • Review shop drawings, equipment manuals, requests for information, change orders and technical submissions from suppliers and subcontractors.  
  • Provide technical direction and construction support to project coordinators, site supervisors, HVAC technicians, installers, subcontractors and suppliers.  
  • Conduct project-site visits to verify field conditions, resolve design or installation conflicts and assess compliance with approved drawings and specifications.  
  • Review the installation of ductwork, piping, mechanical equipment, controls and related HVAC components for conformity with project requirements.  
  • Develop and review testing, balancing, start-up and commissioning procedures for HVAC systems.  
  • Coordinate equipment start-up, system testing, deficiency correction and commissioning activities with technicians, contractors, suppliers and clients.  
  • Investigate HVAC system performance issues and recommend technical modifications to improve system reliability, energy efficiency and operational performance.  
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including design revisions, progress reports, technical correspondence, commissioning records, deficiency lists and as-built information.  
  • Identify project risks, design conflicts, cost variances and schedule delays, and assist in developing appropriate mitigation plans.  

Employment Requirements 

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, energy systems engineering, building services engineering, electrical engineering, electromechanical engineering or another closely related engineering discipline is required.  
  • A minimum of five years of engineering or project-management experience in HVAC, mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, MEP, building services or construction projects is required.  
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering, procurement, construction, testing or commissioning activities is required.  
  • Experience preparing or reviewing technical drawings, specifications, material take-offs, cost estimates and project schedules is required.  
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, building controls, testing and commissioning principles is required.  
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications is required.  
  • Experience with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, HVAC load-calculation software or project-management software is an asset.  
  • Strong project planning, technical analysis, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills are required.  
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical and construction drawings is required.  
  • A valid Ontario driver’s licence is preferred.  
  • Eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario is an asset.  
  • Professional Engineer designation is required only where the employee will independently approve or seal engineering documents.
