Job Overview

A well-established restaurant specializing in Filipino cuisine located in Toronto, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head Chef to lead our kitchen team. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of food preparation and kitchen management to ensure high-quality meals and exceptional customer experiences. This role requires someone with strong leadership skills, a passion for Filipino cuisine, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Estimate the amount and costs of supplies and food items.
  • Maintain records of food costs, consumption, sales, and inventory.
  • Demonstrate new cooking techniques and equipment to the cooking staff.
  • Supervise the activities of specialist chefs, chefs, cooks, and other kitchen workers.
  • Create new recipes and develop unique dishes.
  • Instruct cooks on preparation, cooking, garnishing, and presentation of food.
  • Prepare and cook complete meals and specialty foods for events such as banquets, weddings, and other special functions.
  • Supervise the preparation and cooking of regular meals or for special guests/functions.
  • Requisition food and kitchen supplies as needed.
  • Arrange for equipment purchases and repairs as necessary.
  • Consult with clients regarding special event needs (e.g., weddings, banquets, etc.).
  • Plan and direct food preparation and cooking activities for multiple restaurants (if applicable).
  • Ensure food meets high-quality standards, including for customers with allergies or intolerances.
  • Supervise the activities of sous-chefs, specialist chefs, chefs, and cooks.
  • Train staff in food preparation, cooking, and handling procedures.
  • Lead, motivate, and manage kitchen staff effectively.

Supervision:

  • More than 20 people across various areas of responsibility, ensuring effective team coordination and smooth operations.

Credentials & Requirements:

  • Safe Food Handling certificate required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a chef, ideally with experience in Filipino cuisine.
  • Strong leadership, dependability, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in training and managing kitchen staff.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced and high-pressure kitchen environment.
  • Physically demanding, including standing for long periods, bending, crouching, and lifting heavy loads.
  • Attention to detail is essential.

Personal Suitability:

  • Leadership and ability to motivate staff.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Organized and reliable team player.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to handle heavy kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to remain standing for extended periods, walking, bending, and crouching.
